A DOT number is a unique identification number issued by the US Department of Transportation (DOT) to commercial motor carriers and certain other organizations engaged in interstate commerce. The DOT number serves as a way to track a company’s safety record, compliance with regulations, and accountability for any accidents or incidents that may occur.
Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce are required to obtain a DOT number. This includes companies that have vehicles weighing over 10,000 pounds, transport hazardous materials, or carry more than 8 passengers. In addition, companies that engage in certain types of commerce, such as selling or leasing vehicles in interstate commerce, are also required to obtain a DOT number.
